"The Heart of Watts"

I finally made it to the Watt's Towers! The amazing creation of one man, Sam Rodia over the span of 33 years in the community of Watts in Los Angeles. The Towers consist of 17 interconnected sculptural structures embedded with pieces of porcelain, tile, and glass. Truly awesome. "The Heart of Watts" is my impression of one small part of Rodia's masterpiece. I was inspired to paint "The Heart of Watts" to share this unique and wonderful mosaic sculpture... but of all the elements of the towers that I could have chosen for my composition, I picked the heart... and that's about me and where my head is and my heart. I blame it on all the Kundalini yoga heart opening exercises I've been doing.

"Places I've Been" aka Blue Heaven

A few years back I discovered Blue Heaven, off the beaten path in Key West, Florida. We dined outside as chickens wandered underfoot. The food was wonderful, the best meal of the entire trip. Greeting cards of my watercolor painting of the sign are available on zazzle.com.

My Mission Statement on Buses & Rail Cars Throughout Los Angeles

I will be signing my Metro ‘San Fernando’ poster

at the San Fernando Public Library next Tuesday, June 11th.

Stop by to get your free signed copy of my Metro poster:

Tuesday, June 11 at 10:30 AM

San Fernando Public Library

217 N Maclay Ave, San Fernando, CA 91340

A small section of the San Fernando Mission garden inspired me to paint My Mission Statement, the painting selected for the San Fernando Metro poster. The scene includes tiled roofs, exposed wood beams and an adobe wall, all typical architectural elements of Southern California. The archway, the main focus both visually and symbolically, invites the viewer to step through and explore.
The poster is currently on display on Metro buses and rail cars traveling throughout Los Angeles County.

I hope to see you in San Fernando!

Purple Flower Completed

I'm a little late on updating the progress of this painting... okay, my blogging in general has sucked recently. But at long last here is the finished painting. As I stated in the last post about this painting, I wasn’t  happy with some of the background color and the acrylic in that area was beginning to feel a little heavy to me. So I used Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground, to cover the area on the right hand side of the painting. I am happy with the way the ground accepted fresh watercolor paint. I have since used the watercolor ground in other situations in other paintings and I can recommend it highly. It definitely made a difference in the outcome of this painting.

"Rural Remnants of the San Fernando Valley" at La Galeria Gitana 11-19-11 through 12-24-11

"Matilija Poppy" 16" x 20" Watercolor & Acrylic on paper mounted on canvas

I am happy to be included in another show at La Galeria Gitana in San Fernando:
La Galeria Gitana
120 N. Maclay Avenue Ste. E
San Fernando, CA 91340
(818) 898-7708
Gallery Hours:
Tuesday - Saturday noon to 6 pm

The opening is next Saturday 11-19-11 from 6-10 pm.

Three of my paintings are in this exhibit, including Matilija Poppy. The director of the gallery, Karen Nichols, thought of me for this exhibit because of my painting "After the Rain" a watercolor of the orange tree in my backyard. As I contemplated other possible paintings that might fit the "Rural Remnants of the San Fernando Valley" theme of the show I asked friends and family "What could I paint that represents the rural San Fernando Valley? And it has to be something that I would paint..." I don't paint tractors or trucks... at least I haven't felt the need to do so yet. This was kind of a test, and only a few brave souls were willing to play with me. Brian suggested the Matilija Poppy, a native of the area. It was the perfect suggestion. I had an abundance of photographs of the poppies that I drove by daily each spring for the last few years. They spring up from nowhere and simply take over. They demand attention. I have wanted to paint them for awhile. I liked this particular composition with the chain link fence because it felt like a "rural remnant".
